Gratitude – Recognizing the Good

“The man who forgets to be thankful has fallen asleep in life.” – Robert Louis Stevenson
One of the realities regarding our nation’s observance of Thanksgiving Day, is that there is no guarantee that while celebrating it, participants will express any specific thanks for the good that is in their lives.  For Thanksgiving Day to be a true day of thanksgiving, there are at least three things that must be in place…

Is Your Anchor Holding?

One of the more diverse words in the English language is anchor – far more usages than the obvious usage in reference to a boat or ship. An anchor can also be a lead newscaster giving the daily news, and it can be a large department store that attracts shoppers to a shopping center or mall. It can be the final team member to participate in a relay race. An anchor can be something that provides reliable or principal support – like a football player can be the anchor of his team’s offensive line. Anchors are found in construction and maintenance holding an object firmly in place such as a nut and bolt cable anchor. Anchors can be a fixed object, like a tree or rock, that is used by mountain climbers to keep themselves safe. What do these anchors have in common? Each reflects, in some way or another, a level of strength, stability, security, endurance, dependability, and confidence.

Guard Your Heart

What is the best way to determine what a person is truly like? One of the obvious ways is by observation. We can watch them in action. We can listen to what they say, observe how they live and how they treat people – especially their families, take note of how they use their time, finances, and other resources, discern their priorities, and observe how they handle good times and tough times, success and failure. But even with all that, observation alone cannot help us to know fully what kind of person someone really is.
